Responsibilities


Conductors are responsible for managing the overall safe, on-time operation of their individual train within the scope of the rules of Transportation Department.


THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

-Supervise other train crew members

-Communicate information to passengers, crew and other railroad employees in person and via onboard communication channels

-Enforce and abide by train safety rules

-Operate train doors at station stops and assist customers on and off trains as necessary

-Observe, interpret and relay signal information to engineers

-Read, understand, comply with bulletin orders, general orders and other applicable rules of the

Transportation Department

-Provide flag protection on Right of Way

-Assist with yard switching duties and making up trains (e.g., operate switches and couple air hoses and electrical cables)

-Responsible for on the job training and supervision of conductor trainees

-Manage emergency situations – respond to medical emergencies, equipment breakdowns and direct the evacuation of passengers if necessary

-Verbally direct the movement of trains

-Provide professional customer service to passengers

-Compute and collect fares, sell tickets, make change and prepare accurate cash reports for timely submission

-Register for duty on time

-Prepare trains for service and conduct job safety briefings


Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Ability to quickly and accurately perform basic mental mathematical calculations; reading comprehension; interpersonal skills; customer-service oriented; mechanical aptitude; skilled in exercising independent judgment; ability to anticipate and analyze problems and take corrective actions; must be able to evaluate a situation to make decisions and work under pressure; written and verbal communication skills; ability to multi-task; must be able to function effectively under changing priorities; ability to lead others; knowledge of operating and safety rules; knowledge of physical characteristics; must be safety conscious; time management skills.

Ability to stand and maintain balance on moving trains; Ability to walk on uneven surfaces while navigating tracks and yard; Pushing, pulling and lifting are required to throw switches and maneuver air hoses and electrical cables; Ability to climb onto and down from railroad cars, locomotives and station platforms from ground level; Ability to verbally communicate with passengers, train crews and other railroad employees; Color vision required to read and interpret signal indicators and intercept certain train indicators; Ability to climb under, in-between and around train cars. While having a driver’s license is not required as a condition of employment, those with driver’s licenses will be monitored for compliance as per Federal regulations.

All Conductors assigned to passenger trains are required to wear a Metro-North uniform, including pants, hat, shirt and name badge.


REQUIRED:

-Must have High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma

-External Applicants must have two full years of verifiable work experience involving customer service and/or cash handling experience

-Active Metro-North employees must have completed one year of experience in their current position and

must have completed all formal training commitments, including any applicable on the job training (e.g.,

Signal Trainee, Foreman in Training, etc.)


PREFERRED:

-Professional experience working in a leadership or supervisory capacity or a position requiring initiative and responsibility

-Some prior mechanical experience

-Associate Degree or higher


TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

Selected Trainees must successfully complete Metro-North’s 12-month Conductor training program and all licensing requirements as prescribed by Code of Federal Regulation (CFR). Training involves classroom instruction, field training, on-the-job training and homework assignments. Must become qualified on the Rules of the Operating Department (Book of Rules Qualified) and pass all qualifying written and performance tests during the training program.


Rate of Pay


The starting rate of pay will be $30.06/hour, which is seventy percent (70%) of the full rate of $42.95/hour, pursuant to the current labor contract. A eight (8) year step-rate schedule will be followed until the full rate of pay is reached. The wage progression scale is as follows: 70%


>70% >75% >80% >85% >85% >90% >100%. Credit will be given for previous train service experience based on months of experience accumulated.


Seniority


Seniority accrued in ACRE, the union representing Conductors, will be established as of the date a new employee begins a pre-service training program. New employees with prior Railroad experience will be place on the ACRE seniority roster behind transferees in order of their prior railroad service. New employees without Metro-North or any other Railroad experience will be placed in their class roster in chronological order according to their birth dates.


Assignments


The job openings may be Extra List positions. Those on the Extra List are on call 24 hours per day, five days per week. Assignments can be to any location on the company’s lines and the hours can be irregular.


Promotional Path


Possible promotion paths may include: Locomotive Engineer, Rail Traffic Controller, Yardmaster, Training Officer, Compliance Officer and Transportation Manager


Selection Criteria


To be selected for a position, an applicant must: (1) meet the minimum requirements in the job posting, (2) pass a written examination (if applicable), (3) satisfy a background investigation (which includes credit, if applicable), and (4) pass an oral interview, during which the interviewers will further evaluate the applicant’s qualifications for the position. Because the selection process is competitive, not all qualified applicants are granted an interview. Metro-North may also require the applicant to undergo a physical ability test, and, if the Company extends a conditional offer, may require him or her to undergo a medical examination, which may include toxicological testing.


For applicants who are current employees, you must be in active service and have worked in your present position for at least one (1) year to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, plus on-the-job training, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.) in order to be eligible to transfer. If you are transferred, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present occupation. In addition, Metro-North employees are subjected to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation of their safety and discipline records and their performance assessments.
