United States of America: Seasonal Project Assistant- ICT Policy

Position Summary


Internews’ ICT/ Internet Policy Programs aims to engage and support local organizations, advocates, and human rights defenders around the globe to effectively advocate for an open internet in their countries.


The ICT Policy Season Project Assistant will assist with logistical, research, and administrative support for Internews’ ICT Programs and Policy Unit. She/he will have the opportunity to gain experience in program administration, grant management, and Internews’ work to foster independent media and access to information worldwide. This position will report to the Program Manager for ICT Programs.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Global Digital Download (50%): Internews’ Global Digital Download (GDD), a weekly publication that highlights trends in digital and social media that intersect with freedom of expression, privacy, policy, and censorship. The Season Project Assistant would be responsible for the following tasks related to the GDD:
    • Monitor and aggregate news, research, events and opportunities related to online freedom of expression, privacy, policy and censorship.

    • Compile weekly findings into an email newsletter using online resources.

    • Distribute the email newsletter to subscribers using the MailChimp platform.

    • Increase GDD subscribership by identifying and contacting relevant audiences.

    • Manage the GDD’s Twitter presence and work to increase its reach.


  • Program Administration Support (50%): assist with the following tasks related to administration and implementation of internet policy programs:
    • Assist project leads with basic program implementation and coordination (i.e. data analysis, research).

    • Assist with program logistics, including travel arrangements, meeting schedules and event preparations.

    • Assist with contracting and sub-grant processes.

    • Attend ICT and policy related events and other external meetings as necessary.

    • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree or current college student.

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

  • Background in internet freedom, media development, political science, international relations, or communications is preferred but not required.

  • Experience with website editing and knowledge of Drupal is preferred but not required.

  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS is preferred but not required.

  • Editorial and/or copyediting experience.

  • Experience using Adobe Dreamweaver is preferred but not required.

  • Experience using MailChimp or another online email marketing platform is preferred but not required.

  • Experience using social media management platforms such as TweetDeck, Hootsuite, and Buffer is preferred but not required.
