Who we are

We’re Population Services International (PSI), the world’s leading non-profit social marketing organization. We work to make it easier for people in the developing world to be healthy and plan the families they desire by providing access to products and services that range from mosquito nets to HIV testing to contraceptives.

There are about 9,000 “PSI’ers” around the world. It’s a motley group with a diverse range of backgrounds from the medical industry to the music industry, all with unique skills we bring to the job.

Join us!

PSI is looking for a Chief Operating Officer to partner with the CEO in leading our diverse enterprise. You’ll be overseeing PSI’s operating units in 60 countries across four continents, leading key functional areas including Marketing and Security, partnering closely with our New Business teams to bring in new funding to PSI, and collaborating with other members of the C-Suite as part of PSI’s small Executive Team. We’re looking for a leader who can think big (both near and long term) but who also understands the importance of getting the details right.

Sound like you? Read on to find out more.

Your contribution

The Chief Operating Officer will play a key role in:

Executing excellently

You will guide and oversee PSI’s country level social businesses, each executing on a range of donor deliverables in a highly accountable, cost-effective manner designed to maximize our health impact globally. You will ensure that operational processes are measured for effectiveness and efficiency and will drive initiatives to improve processes.

Setting standards – and then meeting them

The quality of PSI’s programming is measured by a range of indicators including our Network Quality Standards, which you oversee. You will work closely with PSI’s Regional Support, Evidence for Implementation, and Program Analytics teams to ensure we are setting the right performance standards and resourcing capabilities to meet them.

Bringing in the money

Working closely with the Chief Strategy and Resources Officer and his two fundraising teams, New Business Development and Corporate Partnerships and Philanthropy, you will direct our country programs in their efforts to win new money for PSI’s health impact programs.

Taking the lead

This role demands more than just operational leadership. As a member of the Executive Team you will represent PSI broadly to all external audiences, help to hire, onboard and retain PSI’s top talent across programmatic and technical areas, contribute to our setting of PSI’s strategy, make budget and talent decisions, and build your expertise in all areas of our business.

Collaborating to make it all happen

If you prefer to work solo, this is not the role for you. Collaboration is a core value at PSI and everyone works on a team. In addition to being a part of the Executive Team, you will work closely with our board of Directors, and partner with people at all levels of the organization.

We want someone who…

Lives our values

We need someone who lives and breathes our values – someone who can role model Measurement, Pragmatism, Honesty, Collaboration, Trust and Commitment on a daily basis.

Makes it real

We want great ideas, but not if you can’t make them real across PSI. We need someone that can translate complexity to simplicity so that we all understand where we’re headed and what we need to do individually to get us there.

Thrives under pressure

This role isn’t for the meek. We want excitement, not reluctance when a big decision needs to be made or you’re asked to speak in front of 500 people.

Has walked the walk…

This role requires someone who’s got developing country experience, people and program management experience, demonstrated success at scaling up global initiatives, leadership credibility, and a knowledge of the NGO and/or private sector operations around the world.

…and talks the talk

We want someone who is great at communicating with donors, partners and staff at all levels, and can share his/her vision. French ideal, but Spanish language capabilities will also help in this role.

Can take a joke

You take your work seriously, but not yourself.
