Meter Reader - City of Mesa, AZ - Mesa, AZ

This recruitment is being conducted to establish a list of the “most qualified” applicants who may be considered to fill anticipated Meter Reader vacancies. To be considered “most qualified” an applicant will possess equivalent to graduation from high school or GED; a minimum of one year full-time employment in public contact work; AND, at least one year recent experience reading water, gas, and/or electric meters OR recent outdoor work exposure (i.e., laborer, construction worker, landscaper, delivery driver, etc.).

A Meter Reader is responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely reading and recording of water, gas, and electric meters to facilitate customer billing. Work is performed on assigned routes in accordance with established standards for the following:

Safety: no Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reportable accidents, preventable vehicle accidents, or lost-time accidents

Quality: no more than four errors for every 10,000 meters read

Quantity: 561 meters read per day

An essential function of this position is regular attendance with few, if any, unplanned absences, as well as extreme accuracy in meeting daily meter reading quotas An employee in this class is expected to detect and report typical conditions, such as: identifying damaged, malfunctioning, and tampered meters; and detecting and reporting leaks, exposed wiring, and other safety hazards. A Meter Reader is an information source for the City’s Resource Conservation and Energy Diversion Programs.


Work of this class involves nearly continuous walking, considerable bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting under all weather conditions. There is also frequent exposure to possibly vicious dogs, snakes, and/or insect bites. There is significant customer contact requiring tact/diplomacy in dealing with problems/complaints. This class is supervised by a Field Supervisor – Customer Service Operations through a review of the volume and accuracy of reads, meetings regarding problems encountered, and overall results obtained. This class is FLSA nonexempt.


QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Qualifications Required. Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED. Experience equivalent to a minimum of one year of full-time employment in public contact work. Special Requirements. Must possess a valid Arizona Driver’s License by hire date. Must obtain gas operator qualification training administered by the Energy Resources Department to successfully complete one-year probation, and must retain certification throughout employment. Substance Abuse Testing. This class is subject to DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) drug and alcohol testing as outlined in 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 199. Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Work experience reading water, gas, or electric meters and/or utility construction or maintenance work. Experience performing physical outdoor duties under adverse weather conditions.
