Your contribution
Driving recruitment
Every position is different so every recruitment is different too. At the start of a search, a recruiter and hiring manager meet to clarify a position, and its goals and develop a process to find and select the best candidate.
Sourcing savvy
Good candidates often find us through our website and ads. For the best candidates, however, we often find them. That’s why we look for recruiters with sourcing savvy: the knowledge of where the best candidates work and the ability to find them through places like industry listservs, Boolean search strings, LinkedIn, Development Executive Group, personal network and international conferences and trainings.
Emphasize opportunity
Great people come to PSI because of what we do and because of what they can do. We seek a recruiter who can sell opportunity and frame a job from a candidate’s point of view. So a recruiter might seek a project manager who can build relationships with donors; an evaluation specialist who can measure the success of a family planning program; a Vice President who can revive a dispirited team.
Candidate assessment
Knowing whether a candidate can do a job well is the hardest nut to crack in recruiting. Most people can identify experience on a resume but few can ferret out the best ones. At PSI, this means hiring people who can thrive in a team, do their jobs well, and do them with great gusto. To find these people, we want a recruiter who has creative ideas to assess candidates – through writing assignments, interviews, internships, and maybe even auditions.
Negotiate
A golden rule in recruiting is to never make an offer that won’t be accepted. That’s why great recruiters check in with candidates every step of the way – during the initial phone interview, after an interview with a hiring manager, and often in between. Knowing candidates’ doubts as well as what qualities and responsibilities they really want can help a recruiter negotiate a “yes.”
And also:
- Be an active contributor of a fast-paced team that is looking to up-the-game in full cycle recruitment.
- Recommend and drive improvements that impact pipeline quality and our recruiting organization and process.
- Champion recruitment within PSI by coaching and training hiring managers.
- Outsource work to external search firms or recruiting consultants as needed.

The basics
- At least 7+ years of recruitment experience with a search firm or in-house recruiting team (executive level, international and preferably proposal as well).
