United States of America: Executive Director


Organizational Profile: Mali Health is a US-based 501(c)3 nongovernmental organization, founded in 2006, that works in resource-poor settings on the outskirts of Bamako, Mali. We reduce maternal and child mortality by improving access to primary healthcare at low costs and by strengthening the capacity of and participation in local health systems. We implement models of access that improve survival and promote collaboration between communities and local health systems.


Position: Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for Mali Health’s staff, programs, resources, and execution of its mission. S/he will develop deep knowledge of the field, programs, operations, and strategic plans, ensuring Mali Health is a thought leader and effective implementer of the programs that define its mission.


Responsibilities:


Strategy and Leadership


  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous evaluation, and consistent quality of finance, administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; develop plans and resources to achieve the strategic goals of the organization

  • Collaborate with Board and senior staff to refine and implement strategic plan, ensuring the budget, staff, and priorities are aligned with its core mission

  • Cultivate and maintain a strong relationship with the Board; serve as ex-officio of each committee; ensure communication about measurement of performance against stated milestones and goals

  • In partnership with the Board Chair, help build a diverse and inclusive Board that is highly engaged and willing to leverage and secure resources

  • Provide leadership, resources, and support to Mali Health’s National Director and US-based operations to carry out mission and objectives in both countries

  • Engage and develop Mali Health’s volunteers, alumni, partners, and funders

  • Represent Mali Health on local, national, and international levels, publishing positions and impact; emphasis on success of local program as model for replication

  • Develop systems, processes, and structures to assure that growth is accompanied by the necessary activities in human resources, financial, and legal arenas.

Fundraising and Communications


  • Develop and lead fundraising plans and activities, including annual appeals, major donors, board giving, and grants

  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications – from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand

  • Maintain and develop external presence and relationships to develop new opportunities for growth, funding, and partnerships

  • Develop systems and processes as necessary to encourage support from larger funding organizations with higher level reporting requirements

Financial Oversight & Contract Management


  • Maintain financial solvency of organization

  • Report regularly on cash flow, income, balance, and expenses

  • Ensure contract goals, objectives, and activities are met

  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations

  • Ensure effective evaluation of projects and programs

Planning and New Business


  • Build partnerships in new locations in Mali, establishing relationships with the appropriate funders and political and community leaders

  • Enhance Mali Health’s ability to implement research activities

  • Lead periodic review around Mali Health’s strategic plan, vision, and alignment

Requirements: French & English fluency


Benefits and Compensation: Benefits include a health insurance stipend, Bamako housing stipend, travel insurance, flights to Mali, 4 weeks of vacation. Compensation modest, commensurate with experience.
