United States of America: WASH Specialist


The Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB) is responsible for implementing and coordinating the CDC’s response and recovery activities related to complex emergencies, as requested by U.S. government, United Nations agencies, and non-governmental organizations.


ERRB is seeking a qualified WASH specialist to help manage implementation of environmental preparedness activities for Global Health Security, primarily in West Africa


Responsibilities:



  • Assist in developing, implementing and evaluating WASH programs related to Global Health Security and Ebola preparedness activities in West Africa, including but not limited to WASH in health care facilities, including medical waste management.




  • Integrate WASH with infection prevention and control (IPC) programs in the context of health care facilities in lower income countries.




  • Assist in the development of monitoring and evaluation tools and protocols for monitoring WASH interventions in institutions (e.g. health care facilities) and possibly at the community-level, and participate in data analysis and reporting.




  • Provide technical assistance to government and non-governmental organization (NGO) partners to improve their ability to provide and maintain effective WASH interventions.




  • Assist with capacity-building activities for governmental environmental health staff, including developing and implementing training. Liaise/coordinate with other CDC centers and branches, UN agencies, bilateral organizations and NGOs working in Ebola response and the WASH sector in selected West African countries.




  • Skills and experience:




  • Environmental engineering and/or public health (WASH specific experience)




  • Minimum 5 years experience in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of WASH programs in developing country(s)




  • Experience in implementing and evaluating WASH in health facilities in countries with weak health systems




  • Proficient in French




  • Broad public health background




  • Epidemiology skills considered a plus




  • Ebola-specific WASH field experience considered a plus




  • Communication & Interpersonal skills MPH, MS (Engineering) or other relevant advanced degree
