Position Summary
The Intern will provide administrative and programmatic support to the Program Manager and/or Regional Specialist(s), as well as assist with background research and basic analysis. She/he will have the opportunity to assist our Emergency Assistance Program to counter the rising trend of state and non-state actors directly threatening civil society worldwide by working directly with civil society organizations and human rights defenders on the ground. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to one of the Program Managers for Emergency Assistance Programs.
Desired Qualifications
- Current college or graduate student (minimum junior in undergrad)
- Knowledge of Eastern Europe and Central Asia and/or African Great Lakes Region (Burundi, DRC, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) human rights landscape
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and other Office tools
- Ability to work with sensitive data discreetly
- Experience writing, especially research-related writing
- Ability to communicate effectively in English is required
- Strong language skills in Russian or another Eurasian language preferred; ability to communicate in Arabic or Farsi is an asset
Some Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide support for the administrative, logistical, and programmatic aspects of project implementation
- Provide research assistance for programs and proposal development
- Assist with editing/writing proposals, reports, and briefing books
- Maintain files and databases, help develop and produce promotional materials
- Monitor news (worldwide) on human rights defenders, activists and journalists at risk
- Assist with other related projects as needed
