Serviceworker Civil Service Application – Print, complete and return to the City Personnel Office by 5:00 p.m. on January 8, 2016.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in servicing automotive and heavy equipment and assisting mechanics in various mechanical repair duties; performs related work as required.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work in this class involves performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks in servicing automotive and heavy equipment and assisting mechanics in a variety of mechanical repair duties. Driving and maneuvering heavy equipment is also required. The work is performed according to general or specific instructions from the supervisor who inspects work while in progress and upon completion.

ESSENTIAL: Performs and assists other employees in maintaining, repairing and servicing automotive and heavy equipment; checks tires, oil, lubricants, water levels, lights and fuel in vehicles; cleans interior and exterior of vehicles; maintains time and other records; drives and moves vehicles and equipment from place to place and performs bus exchanges on routes; reports defective parts or equipment on vehicles; repairs tires, balances wheels and installs tires and chains on vehicles; performs custodial duties in the interior and exterior of the maintenance facility and other transit facilities, including snow removal and grass cutting around the facilities; maintains bus shelters and bus stops by cutting grass, pulling weeds, removing snow, cleaning glass and picking up litter; operates a variety of hand and power tools.


Typical Qualifications:


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


ESSENTIAL: Knowledge of the practices and techniques related to the repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy equipment; knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions related to the repair and maintenance of vehicles; knowledge of traffic laws and regulations; knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles; ability to safely perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy equipment; ability to handle a variety of tasks without close supervision; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and directions; ability to maintain and make minor repairs to automotive and heavy equipment; ability to work outside during inclement weather; physical ability to handle medium to heavy work with some heavy lifting; ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public; skill in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform various maintenance and repair tasks on automotive and heavy equipment; demonstrated ability to follow a management philosophy that is input oriented and values problem solving and the development of partnerships; demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team; a desire to be part of an organization that values service, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation and teamwork.


ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Some experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment and possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and passenger endorsement.
