Part-time, Assessment Testing Specialist - ESL - Lane Community College - Eugene, OR

High school graduation or equivalent.

Required Experience:
Six (6) months of experience working in a general office environment, including considerable public contact.


AND


Six (6) months experience working with English as a Second Language ( ESL ) learners.

Preferred Education


Post-secondary coursework related to and/or training in teaching English as a Second Language.


AND /OR


Post-secondary coursework in English grammar and/or syntax


Preferred Experience


Experience administering and/or scoring ESL assessment tools.


Experience in a community college setting.


More than six (6) months experience working with learners of English as a Second Language.


Multicultural experience and bilingual proficiency in a non-English languages represented in the Lane community (Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian and/or Arabic).


Bilingual/Multicultural Statement:
Multicultural experience and bilingual proficiency in World languages is preferred.


A demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance the concepts of social justice and culturally competent behaviors is expected.


Equivalency Statement:
Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered for meeting minimum qualifications.

Position Purpose:
This position will be responsible to administer a variety of English proficiency tests to place students at appropriate level in ESL classes and to provide data needed for program required by funding sources.


Essential Functions:

Determines the appropriate test or tests to provide.


Administers and scores a variety of tests on a group or individual basis.


Distributes scores to appropriate persons; discusses test scores and course scheduling options; records students’ tests.


Inputs testing records into computer database and assists in follow-up testing research; provides scoring, maintains testing records.


Performs accurate data entry and other clerical tasks related to the area of assignment; may provide ongoing computer technology support.


Maintains confidentiality of all scores and personnel information.

Supervision Statement:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of a department manager or other supervisor. A lead worker may train, assign work, provide priorities and be available to troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Detailed guidelines and instructions are provided in the form of procedures manuals and/or program requirements. General daily routines are performed independently according to these guidelines. Work is reviewed for the quality of services provided to students and/or community volunteers.


Physical Demands/Working Environment:
Work safely.


Sit and/or stand for long periods of time. May work on a computer for up to eight (8) hours a day.

The operation of office equipment including computer, phone, printer, copy machine, etc.


Use of on-line scheduling software, WIKIs, forms, etc.

Entering data with accuracy and efficiency under time constraints.


Compiling data and generating reports from computerized databases.


Ability to:
Keep accurate records and maintain confidentiality.


Communicate effectively orally and in writing and use active listening techniques.


Learn policies and procedures relating to each test given and follow procedural guidelines accurately.


Work collaboratively and independently.


Work and communicate with persons with a wide range of abilities, and ethnic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds.

Lane was founded in 1964 by a vote of local citizens, and the main campus opened in 1968. The college was a successor to the Eugene Technical-Vocational School that was founded in 1938.
