United States of America: Advocacy Intern


Freedom House promotes the spread of freedom and democracy around the world through research, effective advocacy, and programs that support frontline activists. We are a leader in identifying threats to freedom through our highly regarded analytic reports, including Freedom in the World, Freedom of the Press, Freedom on the Net, and Nations in Transit. With 13 field offices and two U.S. offices, we support the right of every individual to be free.


Position Summary


The Advocacy Intern will support Freedom House’s work with congressional offices and external audiences, assisting with event planning, preparation for congressional advocacy and hearings, and other administrative, communications, and development work as needed. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports directly to the Advocacy Manager.


This is a temporary, unpaid internship that will run approximately from June 1, 2016 – August 1, 2016. Exact start and end date can be somewhat flexible.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Intern must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university. If you are not currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, you are ineligible for this position.

  • Must be available a minimum of 20 hours per week.

  • Political science and international relations majors (or similar) preferred.

  • Experience working for or with Congress preferred.

  • Interest in and knowledge of human rights issues.

  • Knowledge of the U.S. legislative system and processes preferred.

  • Excellent internet research and documentation skills.

  • Excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Eagerness to be creative and take initiative on new ideas and projects.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and balance multiple projects with flexibility.

  • Strong organizational skills.

Some Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assist with outreach to congressional offices

  • Attend congressional hearings and briefings

  • Research and track congressional activity on human rights and democracy promotion legislation

  • Assist in the creation and distribution of external content for Freedom House, including advocacy materials, a bi-weekly newsletter, and website content

  • Update and maintain our internal contacts database

  • Assist with event planning and scheduling

  • Other administrative duties and responsibilities as assigned
