LIBRARY ASSISTANT - City of Chandler - Chandler, AZ





The City of Chandler Cultural Affairs Division is currently seeking qualified individuals to fill the full-time position of LIBRARY ASSISTANT. The ideal candidate will have exceptional interpersonal skills with both internal and external customers, previous public library experience including Teen programming, use of library databases, and experience with computer software programs, Internet resources, and digital resources including e-books.

Job Location: Downtown Library, 22 S. Delaware St., Chandler, AZ 85225

Work Hours: Forty (40) hours per week with a varied schedule, including some weekend and evening shifts.


Classification Summary:
The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform, under professional guidance, duties that require the application of fundamental procedures and techniques of library service. Library Assistants provide specialized patron services and generally assist in the acquisition, preparation, and organization of library materials.


Essential Functions (list not exhaustive):


  • Provides reference assistance using both electronic and traditional sources to library customers;

  • Assists customers in using computer resources;

  • Uses a variety of print and electronic resources and computer software for reference work and for creating and implementing youth programs;

  • Plans and oversees youth reading programs to promote literacy;

  • Assists patrons to find materials appropriate to their reading level and/or interests;

  • Plans and implements special library programs such as children’s lap-sit, craft programs, youth story times, and similar programs;

  • Answers telephones to provide information to library patrons on hours of operation, availability of materials, requests for books to be sent to other branches, and other inquiries;

  • Plans, organizes, and implements programming which includes generating publicity, budgeting and purchasing supplies needed, gathering statistics, and reporting results;

  • Catalogs materials and checks records for accuracy;

  • Processes inter-library loans;

  • Prints reports and distributes as assigned;

  • Searches the library database and adds books, audios, videos, and other acquisitions to catalog database;

  • Searches the international library database and downloads records to library system;

  • Initiates purchase requisitions using computer software to purchase needed materials;

  • Processes invoices for payment;

  • Communicates with vendors to place orders, make payments and handle problems and/or questions that may arise;

  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures;

  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May supervise and train Aides, volunteers, and part-time employees;

  • May assist in selection and acquisition of materials;

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency; and

  • One (1) to two (2) years of general library experience; and

  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License with acceptable driving record; or

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a public library setting;

  • Recent experience planning, organizing, budgeting, and implementing Teen public library programming;

  • Bilingual – Spanish;

  • Proficiency in use of computer software programs, Internet resources, and digital resources including e-books;

  • Recent experience working in a high-volume customer service setting and the ability to multitask in a busy environment.

The position available is regular full-time position and is subject to a six (6) month probationary period. A register of qualified candidates will be active for 4 months should another position become available.


The City of Chandler will conduct a MVRRS (Motor Vehicle Record Request System) check as a condition of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results.


The City of Chandler fingerprints all applicants selected for hire to evaluate the fitness of prospective employees. The examination process may vary if determined necessary.
