Purpose of Position: The Events & Communications Manager will be part of the core IIE Generation Study Abroad team and help drive the success of a signature IIE initiative. S/he will be responsible for managing the annual IIE Summit on Generation Study Abroad, which brings together over 600 participants from around the world. Additionally, the manager will coordinate general marketing and communications needs, including social media, for the initiative. The Events & Communications Manager will also support other major IIE-wide events and meetings. Work is carried out independently under general supervision of Project Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Lead the Summit’s communications strategy including development of content for e-newsletters, brochures, website, and social media.
- Develop annual Summit themes and oversee the session proposal process.
- Manage all details of the Summit and other conferences, including venue sourcing, registration, communication with attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, hotel, on-site staffing and serve as liaison with venue and event management company.
- Identify & conduct internal and external outreach for the Summit. Work with media and programming partners. Communicate with IIE senior management, board members, and high-profile speakers.
- Support budgeting, allocation of expenses and monitoring of event budget & revenue.
- Design evaluations and provide analysis on conference outcomes.
- Oversight of IIE Generation Study Abroad marketing and communication efforts including the production of digital, electronic and print materials.
- Manage the “student campaign” portion of the IIE Generation Study Abroad initiative.
- Analyze and evaluate the performance of IIE’s digital content as well as conduct online surveys and research reports to gather customer insight.
- Maintain digital asset database and manage video and photo projects for the initiative.
- Participate in team and cross-departmental meetings.
May supervise interns and assign tasks as necessary.
May support or lead other major IIE events and meetings.
Responsible for complying with applicable contract and sponsor requirements and following all IIE policies and procedures.
Performs other duties and functions as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, ideally international relations, international education or communications. Master’s degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years of professional experience with event planning with at least 3 years of relevant experience with higher education conferences.
- Experience in marketing, social media management, website content development, and graphic design.
- Experience with marketing to higher education and partnership organizations.
- Knowledge in international education trends (emphasis on study abroad) and U.S. Higher Education.
- Experience with working with higher education professionals from around the world.
- Certificate in Meeting & Conference Management, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- A self-starter who has experience with managing complex high-profile projects which require strong organizational, multitasking, time-management and detailed-oriented skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Excellent information management and analytical skills, including ability to gather needed information, distill and communicate it in a useful and timely manner.
- Previous experience with content management systems (i.e., Sitecore CMS) and producing email newsletters is a plus.
- Ability to interact with all levels of staff and external contacts; sensitive to cultural differences when working with people from other cultures; and ability to exercise discretion on confidential matters and to demonstrate sound judgment in consulting with and keeping others informed.
- Ability to easily adapt to changing organizational and program needs; flourishes in a fast-paced work environment with competing deadlines; and can work independently without close supervision and as part of a team.
- Ability to compare, evaluate, and recommend appropriate course of action.
- Proficiency with MS Office applications including Word, PPT, Excel and Outlook.
- Willingness and availability to travel within the United States.
- Oversee vendor and sub-recipient agreements and review payment requests.
