HIAS seeks a City Director in the Washington Metropolitan area to engage local American Jews (particularly baby boomers and young adults) in HIAS’ work with refugees through education, raising HIAS’ profile, programming, direct service, advocacy, and tzedakah. S/he will implement these activities with a goal of building a critical mass of Jews who will engage locally with HIAS; and work very closely with the Vice President, Community Engagement, Program Director, and Campaigns Director and collaborate frequently with the Educator, Development team, and Communications team.
Essential Functions:
- Raise HIAS’ local visibility and significantly grow the number of Jews knowledgeable about and engaged with HIAS’ work with refugees.
- Establish HIAS’ presence in the Washington Metropolitan area, building relationships and developing strategic partnerships with key Jewish leaders and organizations.
- Identify and galvanize local HIAS constituents and leaders, holding 1:1 and small group meetings to engage them in all aspects of HIAS’ work in the Washington Metropolitan area and to create a local base.
- Effectively communicate HIAS’ mission and goals to a wide variety of audiences and serve as the main spokesperson as needed.
- Create and deliver an array of programs to local audiences, in collaboration with Community Engagement’s Director of Program, Educator, and Director of Campaigns.
- Expand and support volunteer opportunities for Jews to provide direct services to local refugees.
- Collaborate with the Director of Campaigns to organize and mobilize local Jews to advocate for policies that protect refugees.
- Mobilize local Jews to actively participate in HIAS national campaigns and build list-growth and on-line engagement.
- Along with the Program Director, and Campaigns Director, create connections between volunteering and advocacy activities in the D.C. area.
- Identify and develop local HIAS champions who actively engage others with HIAS; identify potential donors for follow up by Development team; support proposal and grant writing for the Development team.
- Work with Communications team to generate earned media attention, particularly in the local Jewish press.
- Identify and capture key metrics while setting ambitious and achievable goals; cull the learnings from the local Pilot City to advance the work and inform HIAS’ work in other cities.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree required. Advanced degree in related field preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience in a related field; background in social justice, human rights, and/or refugee issues.
- Knowledge of the American Jewish community is a must, particularly with experience in the Jewish community in the DC Metropolitan area.
- Demonstrated experience with program development and implementation; experience with organizing and/or advocacy strongly preferred.
- Experience developing and working in successful organizational partnerships preferred; experience working with baby boomers and 20-somethings a plus.
- Must be passionate about HIAS’ mission and committed to promoting the vision that social justice is an integral part of American Jewish life.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills; verbal and written communication skills; and ability to work in close partnerships.
- Quick, creative, entrepreneurial, and flexible, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and opportunities; must be a strong strategic thinker who is also very organized and detail oriented.
- Must possess excellent judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work hard and effectively in a fast-paced new endeavor.
- Ability to work independently while simultaneously acting as a leader and participant in complex collaborative processes; capable of working effectively with remote supervision.
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends; ability to travel to HIAS’ New York office monthly and as required; access to car and ability to travel throughout DC area frequently.
