POSITION DESCRIPTION: CIVIC is seeking highly-qualified applicants (pending funding to be confirmed) for the position of United Nations Senior Policy Advisor. The United Nations Senior Policy Advisor is an integral part of the CIVIC program team reporting to the program director (PD) and working closely with the regional senior program managers. The position is based in New York, with periodic travel to Washington DC, Geneva, and other locations as required.
In many conflicts in Africa, national militaries and armed non-state actors directly target civilians. In these conflicts, more robust and proactive peacekeeping is the most effective—and sometimes only—way to minimize harm to civilians. CIVIC’s “Strengthening the Protection of Civilians in Peacekeeping Operations” program goal is to improve the situation for the most vulnerable civilians in some of the worst conflicts that exist today. We will do this by leading in devising innovative solutions to complex challenges. CIVIC’s strategy for strengthening protection in peacekeeping is based on a combination of original research, thought leadership, advocacy (at HQ and mission level), training, and technical assistance to international organizations, peacekeeping training schools, troop and police contributing countries, and civil society groups.
The UN Senior Policy Advisor is the principal advisor and spokesperson for CIVIC’s issues at the UN and on UN-related issues in New York. S/he is responsible for working with CIVIC’s other programmatic staff to develop and implement advocacy strategies on the full range of countries and thematic issues on which CIVIC works. S/he should be experienced working with the UN Security Council, as well as the Secretariat and UN agencies, including contact and regular meetings with UN officials and diplomats from member states. In addition, the UN Senior Policy Advisor will be the lead spokesperson for CIVIC engaging frequently with the UN press corps, and with the media more broadly on UN-related issues.
