Work involves using skilled craft painting and mechanical methods and techniques in the preparation of surfaces, equipment, and machines; and applying paint to surfaces. Work is performed under general supervision and is subject to inspection upon completion.
Examples of Duties:
Reads and interprets layouts, blueprints and job requirements.
Applies paint manually or mechanically utilizing brushes or spray equipment.
Prepares equipment and machines, such as heat-painted roadway striping, truck and self-propelled spray-painting machine.
Paints traffic markings, traffic signals, fire alarm boxes, parking meters, parking posts and parking lots.
Keeps record of daily work accomplishments.
Drives heated-paint roadway striping truck down roadway and injects glass beads into spray paint for painting center, lane and edge lines, considers viscosity, covering capacity, drying time and traffic conditions for each job.
Paints various markings with use of a stencil.
May supervise laborers, apprentices or assistants.
Applies hot and cold plastic marking material to pavement.
Cleans painting equipment machines and tools.
Inventories’ quantities of material available, used and needed.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED; and considerable experience as a painter, including experience in operating roadway striping machines and possession of a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the State of Illinois required.
Supplemental Information:
Considerable knowledge of standard practices, tools and equipment of the painting trade.
Considerable knowledge of equipment, methods and techniques of painting highways, streets, traffic markings and signals.
Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in traffic painting.
