SUMMARY: Responsible for advocating for victims, witnesses and significant others in the Criminal and Juvenile Justice Systems, providing court accompaniment and emotional support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Entry of any/all data for agency as needed/required into all necessary databases. Must have substantial computer knowledge in data entry. (Programs include, ETO, R-Client, CAPE)
- Provide crisis counseling, reassurance, and support to victims, witnesses and significant others.
- Develop and maintain an understanding attitude towards victims, witnesses and significant others.
- Identify the needs of clients and make appropriate referrals.
- Track case status and notify victims, staff and other clients of proceedings, as necessary.
- Prepare and accompany victims, witnesses and significant others to criminal and juvenile justice proceedings, as assigned.
- Assist in referral process for those clients whose needs exceed program guidelines.
- Inform victims of their rights, including the availability of Crime Victim’s Compensation, and assist victims in preparing impact and input statements as needed.
- Notify victims of the offender release program when necessary.
- Provide information on services available to victims, witnesses and significant others and assist them in utilizing rights and resources available.
- Orient victims, witnesses and significant others to the criminal and juvenile justice process.
- Provide outreach and accompaniment during preliminary hearings at Central Court and other locations.
- Provide hotline/on-call services as assigned.
- Maintain accurate, thorough documentation and submit in a timely manner.
- Assist in data collection for reporting purposes.
- Participate in conferences, in-services, training, seminars, team and staff meetings.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, co-workers, other agencies and general public.
- React productively to change and handle other tasks as assigned.
- Ability to perform other duties as assigned.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Some flexibility in hours of work.
- Able to drive and travel. Provide copy of valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance.
- Act 33, 34 and FBI Clearances.
- Confidentiality training.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs. with ease.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in the human services field, Criminal Justice Degree Preferred.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system.
- Proficient in computer programs currently in use in the agency.
- Able to withstand emotional stress.
- Flexible, able to tolerate many situations and personalities.
- Able to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries and complaints.
- Able to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, memos.
- Able to write simple correspondence.
- Able to effectively present information and respond to questions one-on-one and to small groups.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions and solve problems.
- Able to organize personal area and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Possess auditory acuity to listen to people over the telephone and in person.
- Possess visual acuity to read computer screen, correspondence, notes, reports, and technical documents.
- Possess ambulatory ability in situations involving court accompaniment.
