Special Information:
This position is funded for approximately 1020 hours, starting part time in mid April, full time from mid May through mid September and part time from then until mid-October. Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. This position is not eligible for paid health, dental and life insurance. Other benefits include retirement, paid vacation, sick leave and holidays. This position is located in Brush Lake State Park.


Ability to lift 50 lbs, sit or stand for long periods of time, work in environmental extremes for long periods of time; assist public in extremely harsh terrain, willingness to travel on occasion and work most weekends & holidays. Will be required to wear a Montana State Parks uniform and comply with Parks Division and department policies. Will be required to travel to trainings and coordination meetings with the Park Manager and other Division staff.


This position works varied schedule including weekends.

Duties:
The Park Ranger (Generalist) job purpose is to assist park managers in all daily operations of a unit or units of the State Park System. This work will primarily encompass broad administrative, operational, maintenance, and public relations activities. This position will also be tasked with conducting park rule compliance duties within the scope of their training, and providing operational support to the park manager for supervision of staff, visitor use management, facilities and grounds maintenance, and public safety services within Brush Lake State Park. This position provides essential services and tasks as they arise, such as building and grounds maintenance and cleaning, park rule compliance, fee collection and remittance, interpretation and education, and other various responsibilities.


This position will work under the immediate supervision of the Park Manager, and will provide direction for other park staff and volunteers.


Major job responsibilities:
1. Park Management


Provides resource stewardship in a proactive manner, providing recommendations to the Park Manager based on observations of visitors, staff and volunteers. Detects unacceptable impacts to park infrastructure, natural and cultural resources and develops solutions to correct or mitigate problematic impacts.


Acts as a lead worker when supervising or directing seasonal employees, and volunteers. This includes assisting with recruitment, training, and evaluation of assigned staff.


Completes administrative functions such as fee collection, banking, remittance processing, collecting visitation information, incident reporting, comment card processing, visitor surveys, authorized purchases, and enterprise sales.


2. Facility and Grounds Maintenance


Completes maintenance of assigned facilities, grounds, natural and cultural resources.


This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating, directing and inspecting work performed


Maintaining and repairing buildings and facilities


Maintaining grounds in order to provide safe and enjoyable recreational opportunities to the public


Maintaining equipment in a proactive sustainable manner for Montana State Parks


Regional coordination, communication and oversight of maintenance program efforts at Brush Lake


Weed control, water testing, plumbing, electrical work and other skilled crafts


3. Public Safety Services


Participates in park safety programs including grounds and facility inspections to identify hazardous conditions, and ensure safety of staff and visitors.


Provides services to visitors, including first aid and visitor assistance.


Assists local and state emergency services personnel in site-specific incident management, first aid, search and rescue, and emergency services.


4. Interpretive and Educational Services


Participates in day-to-day and special event interpretive and education programs.


Participates in the design, implementation, and distribution of park pamphlets, brochures, educational materials and teaching resources.


5. Park Rule Compliance


Patrols park roads, trails, facilities, grounds and other park areas via motor vehicle or foot to monitor visitor activities and resource conditions.


Explains and interprets rules, policies, and laws to public.


May be required to perform duties within the Ex-officio commission purview after satisfying training requirements and commission certification. Ex-officio duties include; enforcing department and park rules, regulations, and state laws. Investigates and documents offenses and incidents in accordance with Parks Division incident reporting policy.


6. Other Duties


Assists park manager with budget analysis, operations assessments and other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Skills:
Administrative, communication and general maintenance skills. Skills must be applied to park site situations where other factors may require a degree of sensitivity and restraint such as in riparian or cultural areas. Basic computer skills include word processing, spreadsheets and email.


Communicates clearly and professionally. Sets priorities considerate of limited resources, public safety and health, management concerns and skill levels. Maintains facilities professionally and with pride with or without established standards. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships. Self-motivated, dependable, reliable, flexible, adaptable to a wide variety of situations and able to work independently. Knowledge:
Knowledge of park maintenance and interpretation principles. Working knowledge of methods and practices of general maintenance work as related to buildings, facilities and grounds, use and care of tools, and operation of a variety of lawn equipment.


The following qualifications are required on the first day of work.


Must have a current driver’s license and acquire a Montana driver’s license within 6-months of hire date.


Incumbent must be able to carry 50-pounds up to 50-yards.


Must be willing to serve the public in a distinguished professional demeanor.


Must have extensive knowledge of natural resources, park, and outdoor recreation management principles, this includes use of equipment and tools.


Must have basic knowledge in the care and use of power and hand tools.


Incumbent must have basic computer skills.


Incumbent must have the ability to speak and present in public forums and to write effectively.


Incumbent must have the ability to work with others, collectively pursuing a common goal regardless of personal preferences. Maintains emotional control and maturity.


Must pass a background investigation if determined that they will become an Ex-officio warden.


Education/Experience:
The knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the duties of this position are usually acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation or a closely related field, plus one to two years of job-related work experience in parks and recreation management or a closely related field. Other possible educational backgrounds may include Interpretation, Education, Archeology, or Anthropology. Other combinations of education and experience which could provide such knowledge, skills and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
