Campaigner – North America
Washington DC
Permanent
$73,368 per annum
Amnesty International is shifting its centralized International Secretariat (IS) into a more strong, coherent and visible presence in strategic locations in the global South.
In the Americas, we are developing a stronger presence with our structures in the region: the Regional Office in the Americas based in Mexico City, a Sub-regional Office for the Southern Cone and the Andean Region in Lima, Peru, and a small presence of IS research and campaign staff in Washington. Being closer to the ground will enable us to operate with greater speed and relevance and to be more agile and responsible to the demands of our human rights agenda.
Amnesty International’s Americas Region is looking for an experienced Campaigner for our work in North America to mobilize our worldwide membership in support to human rights campaigns in the region, particularly to promote rights in contexts related to discrimination, police violence, security policies, migrants and refugees and death penalty, among other important issues.
About the role:
As an evidence -based campaigning organization, building strong strategies for action to engage and mobilize our members, activists and partners is fundamental to achieve our goals and long-lasting strategies for change. Whether we are addressing restrictions on freedom of expression, violations of the rights of migrants, or denouncing sexual violence against women, our campaigns make a difference. You will contribute to deliver powerful global, regional and national campaigns that inspire people to act and protect human rights defenders.
Our North America Campaigner will work in close collaboration with our USA Researchers, sections and other programme teams to launch campaigns for action by developing innovative campaign tactics and techniques, capitalising on communications and social media channels, and identifying and fostering opportunities for partnership and collaboration with other social and human rights movements and communities addressing issues affecting North America, particularly in the USA.
About you:
With experience of working on human rights issues, you must have first-hand in-depth knowledge and experience of the socio-political and economic context in the USA, and global human rights trends.
You will have substantial experience of strategic human rights campaigning, including knowledge of the steps required to devise and implement effective campaigning strategies. You must also have experience and an understanding of membership organizations, and the capability both to work on your own initiative and as a member of a large and diverse team, often under pressure.
Your background in activism, academia, social science, or communication with the ability to identify opportunities to ensure our voice has authority. You have strong knowledge of and experience working to address human rights issues in North America and familiarity with international human rights frameworks. With your extensive experience of working from the region, you have a strong network and rich experience of undertaking this kind of sensitive work in the field. A natural collaborator, you need influential communication skills, impartial political judgement, coupled with strong strategic thought.
About us:
Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. We reach almost every country in the world and have:
· more than 2 million members and supporters who drive forward our fight for rights
· more than 5 million activists who strengthen our calls for justice
Our aim is simple: an end to human rights abuses. Independent, international and influential, we campaign for justice, fairness, freedom and truth wherever they’re denied. And whether we’re applying pressure through powerful research or direct lobbying, mass demonstrations or online campaigning, we’re all inspired by hope for a better world. One where human rights are respected and protected by everyone, everywhere.
