FHI 360 is a leader in health and nutrition research, has extensive experience in evaluations of education, social and economic development, and workforce development programs, and is launching a new initiative to bolster research and evaluation across all sectors in the organization. The initiative will involve and serve the entire FHI 360 organization. The initiative will leverage existing international and domestic research and evaluation (R&E) capabilities to expand its presence in global and US education, in health and in the broad areas of social and economic development.
The Director, R&E Strategic Initiative (R&E-SI), will take the lead in developing and coordinating the work envisioned in this internally funded 3 year initiative in collaboration with scientific leadership from all key units. The Director will chair an R&E-SI Steering Committee that will be created with representation, based on their R&E expertise, from all business units and regional offices, as well as with representation from related special initiatives.
Job Summary / Responsibilities:
The Director, R&E SI will report to the Director, Scientific Affairs, Global Health Population and Nutrition (GHPN). The Director will develop and oversee a work plan and budget for the Initiative and further articulate the vision and goals for the R&E-SI, involving all FHI 360 Business Units; set up the processes to oversee an R&E-SI Investment Fund; develop an R&E-SI business development plan; conduct a landscape analysis for the Evaluation practice area that builds on work begun under the R&E Mapping Exercise and Working Group auspices; understand and devise a strategy and propose structures to mitigate real and perceived conflict of interest (COI); and develop a communications strategy for R&E at FHI 360.
Other Responsibilities:
- Strategic planning and execution: Work collaboratively across existing FHI 360 sectors and business units to develop a strategic plan for FHI 360’s international and domestic R&E business development. Oversee execution of that strategy, put efficient systems in place to support the success of the effort
- Business development: Identify and track upcoming priority business opportunities including participation in cross-practice area meetings. Liaise with sector/practice areas in pursuit of strategic evaluation opportunities. Lead key proposals and provide substantial support to other senior staff who are leading proposals. Work with management and senior staff to promote FHI 360’s R&E work and reputation
- Client relations: Develop and build relationships with key clients at USAID, NIH, CDC, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and other funding organizations; serve as a key point of contact for R&E work with clients outside the organization
Qualifications:
- Doctorate in a field of development relevant to FHI 360’s work is preferred, Master’s degree level education with extensive relevant experience may be considered
- Demonstrated expertise and leadership in research and/or evaluation
- 10+ years of experience working in research and/or program evaluation in health, nutrition, education and/or social and economic development
- Collaborative, team-building leadership style
- Experience in developing successful proposals (grants, contracts, etc.)
- Enthusiasm for building the culture of research and evaluation excellence across FHI 360 sectors and business units
- Excellent managerial and strategic planning skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience conducting or managing rigorous research and/or evaluations in US and international settings
- Experience overseeing data collection in developing countries and in poor urban and rural communities in the US
- Experience working with key funders of research or evaluation programs
- Experience in the use of research and evaluation results in program design
