Evidence Technician
In this position, you will collect and manage evidence, property, and items scheduled for destruction for CSPD (Colorado Springs Police Department).
Typical Responsibilities
Ensure that all required information corresponds with the information in the Evidence OnQ system during the evidence intake process and that a barcode label is attached; check information on the barcode label and in the evidence tracking system for completeness
Scan evidence and property into storage locations
Process items requested by the crime laboratory; follow-up as required
Check firearms before storage to determine if loaded and ensure that weapons are properly marked and packaged
Locate storage locations and prepare evidence boxes for the safe storage of evidence for each homicide case
Store evidence and personal property in a manner that promotes item integrity and security
Protect stored items against damage, deterioration, loss, or tampering and in a manner that poses no hazards to persons or cross-contamination with other objects
Check and collect evidence/property in lockers at various police locations
Verify identity and/or proper documentation for release of evidence or property; document history of evidence or property regarding release or disposition; and process owner notification on released evidence and personal property
Assist with the destruction of contraband, firearms, or other items designated to be destroyed
Prepare and transport evidence to and from CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigation)
Answer phones and respond to emails; provide information to CSPD personnel, District Attorney’s office, and the public
Perform evidence and personal property disposition in strict accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes and established procedures and guidelines
Testify in court

Methods and techniques of filing and record-keeping
Established safety procedures related to safe lifting, handling biological/blood contaminants, sharp objects, forklift operations, and firearms
Basic police operations and protocol
Principles and practices of property and evidence custody Ability to:
Interpret and understand changing policies, procedures, and guidelines
Conduct extensive research utilizing multiple databases and software systems
Remain up-to-date on evidence practices and policies
Provide excellent customer service in often tense situations
Maintain and update a variety of files and records
Use modern office equipment, including computers Work is performed primarily in an office environment with some travel and possible exposure to extreme weather conditions, dust, noise, vibrations, and biohazards. Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task and lift up to 30 pounds overhead is required.
The job offer will be contingent upon successful completion of a polygraph examination, drug test, extensive background check, and other pre-employment assessments.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
One year of full-time clerical or administrative support experience.
Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license.
Possess, or obtain within six months of hire, NCIC/CCIC (National Crime Information Center/Colorado Crime Information Center) certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working a law enforcement setting.
Experience using criminal justice databases and software, such as NCIC, Records Management Systems, evidence tracking systems, and court databases.
Experience handling police evidence.
