Police Service Assistant - Lake Havasu City - Lake Havasu City, AZ

Special note: Some assignments require non-standard or rotating shift work; subject to days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Primary assignment will either be in the Jail Facility or in Property/Evidence.

The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service skills and will be trustworthy, organized, reliable and self-motivated. They will be a team player who has the ability to multitask, is flexible and accepts direction well. In addition, they will be able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and department staff.

The City reserves the right to consider only the most highly qualified applicants. The succeeding examination processes may be required: training and experience, testing, panel interview, fingerprint identification, employment eligibility verification (EEV) requirements, personnel evaluation profile (PEP), polygraph test, background investigation and alcohol/drug screening test. Appointment subject to successful background investigation and City paid post-employment medical examination after offer of employment has been made.


Class Description:

Incumbent is responsible for performing support activities related to the area of assignment, which may include:


  • Transportation and custody duties of persons booked into or sentenced to the police department jail.

  • Custody and control of property and evidence submitted to the police department property and evidence section.

  • Evaluation, notification, and/or repair of maintenance issues related to the facility.

  • Coordination of repair and service for department vehicle fleet.

Education & Experience/Licensing & Training:


Education & Experience:

High School Diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D) and a minimum of six (6) months experience in the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position such as those listed below.


Licensing & Training:


  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License of appropriate class.

  • Ability to pass a background and polygraph examination.

Essential Duties/Knowledge & Skills:


Essential Duties:

  • Receives handcuffed prisoners.

  • Inventories prisoners’ personal property.

  • Completes booking sheets and related forms.

  • Posts and maintains logs and files.

  • Weighs, measures, fingerprints and photographs prisoners.

  • Runs intoxilyzer tests.

  • Assists with evidence to include custody and control of property submitted to the police department.

  • Assists with Animal Control when necessary.

  • Assists with mail.

  • Assists records clerks.

  • Schedules and supervises community service workers as provided by the court.

  • Coordinates the repair and service of fleet vehicles. May perform minor maintenance of vehicles onsite (e.g. changing windshield wiper blades).

  • Duties may include preventive maintenance and minor repair to the facility, collection of trash, cleaning and setting up tables and chairs.

  • Maintains regular attendance.

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Record keeping procedures.

  • Fingerprinting and booking procedures.

  • Procedures for physically controlling and safely transporting prisoners.

Skill in:

  • Dealing diplomatically with prisoners, the public and other employees.

  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Physical Requirements:


Physical Requirements:

Sufficient to control and transport prisoners; operate equipment including 35MM, digital, and video cameras; fingerprinting equipment; automobiles; telephones; handcuffs; and prisoner restraints.


Hearing ability: sufficient to communicate effectively with others in person, by telephone and over radio equipment.


Speaking ability: sufficient to communicate effectively with others in person, by telephone and over radio equipment.


Visual ability: sufficient to operate vehicles by both day and night; observe unsafe road conditions; read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, operate equipment related to area of assignment, etc.
