United States of America: Senior Accountant

WFP is currently recruiting for the position of Senior Accountant to support to the CFO and Controller to ensure accurate and timely financial statements for WFP. The Senior Accountant provides high-level professional accounting relating to financial records, financial analysis, account reconciliation, and budget preparation and analysis. This position is based at WFP’s headquarters in Denver, Colorado.


Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent work experience as well as six or more years of professional experience with a minimum of four years of professional level accounting experience. The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal skills and comfort communicating with diverse and international constituents to provide excellent customer service, and an intermediate to advanced understanding of accounting, auditing, taxes and financial reporting. Experience with international development and a connection to WFP’s mission is also desired for this position.


Essential Job Functions and Duties


· Work closely with Staff Accountant to ensure accurate and timely accounting and reporting for all HQ activities.


· Prepare HQ monthly financial statements.


· Ensure and approve accurate and timely bi-weekly payroll.


· Reconcile HQ monthly bank and investment accounts.


· Facilitate budget process with HQ department managers.


· Manage grants including: tracking grant revenue and expense in accounting software and communicating with RFMs and working with Business Development BD staff to project ongoing revenue for budget and forecast purposes.


· Prepare monthly reports for HQ department managers including: general ledger/transaction detail budget vs. actual statements, and projections.


· Meet with department managers to communicate budget and projection variances.


· Prepare monthly intercompany statements to country offices to reconcile all intercompany transactions, prepare intercompany journals, etc.


· Ability to work with multiple currencies within accounting and financial systems.


· Reconcile balance sheet and income statement ledgers each month for HQ.


· Help define and communicate accounting and financial procedures and train staff as needed around compliance.


· Follow organization policies and ensure compliance, with particular attention to internal controls.


· Play a key role in the preparation of the annual external audit and 990 tax return.


· Serve as back up to the Controller, including back up administrator for accounting and planning systems.

· Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form with those who may not possess a financial background.


EDUCATION/FORMAL TRAINING/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:


· Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent work experience.


· CPA preferred


· Minimum of six years of professional experience


· Minimum of four year of professional level accounting experience


· Minimum of two years of experience in non-profit preferred


· Flexible and able to coordinate multiple projects and meet tight deadlines


· A creative thinker, energetic and able to demonstrate enthusiasm and leadership


· Advanced computer proficiencies with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook, and Adobe.


· Advanced knowledge of NetSuite or other cloud-based accounting software


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally to developing countries less than 10 % of time, where travel is rugged.

· Normal office environment
