United States of America: Financial Accounting Lead


HAI currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Financial Accounting Lead. This individual will assist the Director of Finance and Financial Accounting Supervisor to ensure the accuracy of the financial information reported to donors, other external interested parties and senior staff of the organization. The Financial Accounting Lead will coordinate with budget and grant staff regarding reporting requirements and compliance issues. This also encompasses collaborating with accounting staff in our field offices to ensure the information is received in a timely way and according to the requirements of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The Financial Accounting Lead will assist the Director of Finance and the Financial Accounting Supervisor in monthly reporting and preparation for the annual fiscal and A-133 audits.
The person in this role is responsible for overseeing the verification of financial data from various field offices, assisting with the development and updating of financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable local as well as US federal laws, rules and regulations. This position reports to the Financial and Accounting Supervisor but exercises responsibility, seeking out authoritative advice and guidance only when necessary, and exercising independent judgment.
This position will assist the Financial Accounting Supervisor to lead the accounting staff members in country project locations. The headquarters accounting group is responsible for compiling and ensuring the quality and accuracy of accounting information by reviewing the financial information submitted from our field offices. The accounting group is responsible for providing feedback and assistance to the field office accountants to ensure the field operations financial information is reported properly. The accounting team works in partnership with grants, budget and program staff to ensure effective accounting management controls are followed, ensure that the organization is in compliance with local legal and donor requirements, and is responsible for maintaining an accounting system capable of providing quality financial information required to support HAI’s global mission.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Auditing and oversight:



  • Oversee and coach field accounting staff to ensure compliance with organization policies and procedures, U.S. and foreign laws and regulations, and donor rules and regulations.




  • Provide ongoing technical support/training regarding the use of the accounting program or treatment of accounting transactions.




  • Continuously review and evaluate the information obtained from HAI field offices to verify whether current systems are adequate. Propose solutions when necessary.




  • Work in partnership with grants and budget staff to meet reporting requirements of donors.




  • Assist in development of budgets for new grant applications.




  • Monitor changes in accounting rules through the AICPA and other technical journals for non-profits. Update staff as to changes that may affect HAI.




  • Respond to financial information/budget requests.


    Accounting Peachtree program:




  • Troubleshoot difficulties and provide guidance for field and HQ staff


    Financial and A-133 Audit preparation:




  • Assist Director of Finance and Financial Accounting Supervisor in preparing client schedules prior to field audit, answering questions during audit and responding to follow-up questions.




  • Assist Director of Finance and Financial Accounting Supervisor to meet reporting deadlines of donors and outside agencies.




  • Coordinate preparation of schedules and documents and respond to audit requests


    Provide Financial analysis:




  • Coordinate with budget and grants staff to analyze actual financial activity and assist with budget proposals.


    Provide guidance and coaching for field accounting staff:




  • Mentoring field accounts staff.
