Holland America Line opens the eyes of our guests to the world’s wonders by giving them unforgettable experiences, both on ship and on shore. The role of the Location Guide is to introduce our guests to the cultural and scenic beauty of Alaska through engaging group presentations and exceptional one-on-one interactions. Primary responsibilities include:

Before each journey…


  • Familiarizing yourself with the itinerary of the sailing in Alaska

  • With Cruise Director, Shore Excursion staff, and others, reviewing incoming guest demographics to make any necessary programming adjustments

  • Reaching out to port agents to get information on any unique events or challenges that might impact the experience

During each journey…

  • Delivering informative and entertaining 40 minute destination presentations (up to two per day) to large audiences

  • Preparing, reviewing and rehearsing presentation materials and participating in mock presentations with trainers and supervisors as needed

  • Delivering engaging narration for specified scenic cruises

  • Conducting online research and maintaining personal communications to ensure all port information is accurate and current

  • Co-hosting the daily morning show with the Cruise Director when requested

  • Providing exceptional one-on-one customer service to guests by staffing regular desk hours while at sea and being available on the gangway while in port

  • Working closely with Shore Excursions colleagues to ensure continuity in our destination message and developing strategies that support onboard revenue goals

  • Regularly visiting ports to make local contacts and to collect information about current happenings, must see events and locations

  • Participating in additional guest programs and activities when requested

  • Coordinating with local troupes that perform onboard

  • Participating in other duties as assigned including and not limited to Health, Environmental, Safety and Security responsibilities

After each journey…

  • Reviewing guest feedback and making necessary adjustments to achieve improved performance

  • Making updates and corrections to port guides and other materials

  • Completing and submitting post-journey evaluation forms

  • Participating in program and performance reviews as requested

  • an adventurous spirit and outgoing personality

  • an innate desire to make travel enjoyable for others

  • a demonstrated ability to give compelling presentations to large audiences

  • a personality that balances enthusiasm, friendliness and approachability with reliability, trustworthiness and safety.

  • The drive to do everything in the best possible way

  • The ability to inspire confidence in our guests and respect in our colleagues

  • open and honest communication and keep all promises and commitments

  • a hands-on, highly flexible and can-do attitude

  • creativity and are quick thinking and quick-learning

Preferred but not required…

  • Proficiency in one or more of the languages spoken in the region of the itinerary

  • Existing relationships with local experts (authors, curators, etc.), performers (musicians, dancers, etc.), or personalities with whom HAL might cultivate ongoing relationships

Required Experience

  • at least three years’ experience in the travel or hospitality industry in a role that combines public speaking and customer service

  • extensive experience with the destinations of the journey, ideally through extensive travel or long-term residence in Alaska
