Facility Locator - Huntsville Utilities - Huntsville, AL

DESCRIPTION

Job Statement:
Locates and marks Huntsville Utilities underground facilities (electric, gas, water and fiber) for excavators.


DUTIES


Essential Duties:
1. Promotes positive company image through good customer relations and prompt service.


2. Utilizes electronic equipment, maps, records and a good working knowledge of Huntsville Utilities underground construction practices to locate and mark Huntsville Utilities underground facilities.


3. Reports accurate information each day as to the status of locate tickets assigned for the day.


4. Utilizes procedures and record keeping required by Federal DOT Office of Pipeline Safety and Alabama Public Service Commission for locating Huntsville Utilities underground natural gas facilities.


5. Interprets work order blueprints and plot plans in order to determine locations of buried gas, water, and electric facilities.


6. Recognizes unsafe or deteriorated conditions in the field that require facilities relocations, work order preparation or emergency repair and notifies the appropriate department.


7. Notifies the appropriate department supervisor when any situation arises that may require Huntsville Utilities to expose or supervise the exposure of facilities.


8. Assists in the dispatch office or in the field during emergencies, as required, to locate and mark underground facilities.


9. Responds to emergency call-outs which includes storm response and rotating call duty for after hours locates.


10. Performs additional duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS


Job Requirements:
Education/Training/Certifications: High school graduate or equivalent is required. Certification beyond high school in an applicable/relevant discipline is preferred. Must be able to read, write, and perform basic mathematical computations.


Experience/Skills: Knowledge of underground facility installation and operation. Minimum of 2-5 years of experience is preferred. Satisfactory completion of Operator Qualification Testing required by the DOT. Familiarity with the Federal DOT Office of Pipeline Safety Guidelines and the Alabama Public Service Commission Guidelines for locating underground natural gas facilities is preferred.


Equipment: Company vehicle, valid drivers license, cable locating equipment, hand tools, computer, telephone, copier, fax, 2-way radio and mapping.


Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions: Outside work possibly in inclement weather; long work hours possibly during emergency situations (i.e., emergency call outs and rotating duty). Extensive walking and lifting up to 50 lbs., visual acuity & manual dexterity.


Other: Frequent work in close proximity to high voltage (electric) and high pressure (gas & water) facilities. Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, contractors and the public. Successful completion of a locating test prior to interview.
