The Unit Secretary acts as the primary secretarial resource for the Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, and Director for the unit. The Unit Secretary assists in maintaining stock and ordering supplies. The Unit Secretary directs communication within the nursing unit, assists with entering patient information in the hospitals information systems, and is responsible for the smooth operation of all secretarial functions.


This is a highly visible role with a large degree of physician, visitor, and patient interaction. The quality of interactions will be determined by the philosophy, mission, and values of the hospital. The Unit Secretary will maintain and support the concept of the family unit while assisting to meet the health care needs of patients, their families, and the community. The Unit Secretary should strive to promote harmony in the unit.

Duties include the following:


·Assist the Charge Nurse by coordinating non-clinical activities for

a

the nursing unit

·Sends faxes, makes copies, and orders supplies for the unit

·Organizes, assembles, or breaks down medical records upon admission, transfer, or discharge

·Processes physician’s orders and manages information flow among nursing staff, physicians, ancillary departments, patients, and other unit guests

·Responds appropriately in emergency situations

·Greets and directs visitors at the nurses’ station in a friendly and prompt manner

·Answers telephone calls and call lights in a prompt and courteous manner


Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:

•Medical Terminology (preferred)

EXPERIENCE:


•Minimum of 1 year experience preferred
